Eagles soaring high as season winds down

East Catholic dropped just its second game this season on Saturday, falling to Glastonbury 9-4.

That’s pretty impressive considering the Eagles returned just one starter back from last year’s squad.

At 16-2, East Catholic has to be the favorite to win the Class S state tournament.

They have one of the state’s top arms in senior Tucker Panciera, a crafty Fairfield-bound lefty. He’s 6-1 (only lost two games in four years) and is batting above .400 with 15 RBIs.

From the top to bottom, their lineup doesn’t seem to have a hole, and the Eagles got a big boost (literally and figuratively) from Manchester-transfer K.C. Carone. The 6-3, 250-pound junior has stepped in the clean-up spot and is batting around .500 with two homers in six games.

After falling to Southington on opening day, East Catholic rattled off 15 straight wins. That included wins over Glastonbury and Berlin.

The Eagles face Manchester today and Windsor on Wednesday before heading into the state tournament, likely as the top seed.
