North Haven (6-4) has now gone 6-1 since starting the season 0-3

Top ranked ND-West Haven falls to Law

Touch 'em All: Monday's baseball notebook

#ctbase – Down goes No. 1 and it’s hard to get a hit against Pomperaug. Touch ‘em all.
FIRST BASE
THE LAW ONE – Last season Law went 5-15. There were plenty of games where you could look at the scoreboard and say, “they could’ve won that.” Actually in games decided by five runs or less last season, Law was 1-5. However, yesterday Law picked up what could go down as the biggest upset victory of the season in a 1-0 11-inning Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision victory over top ranked Notre Dame-West Haven. Law has won three in a row heading into today’s game against rival Foran. Law’s (4-6) Matt Ferriaolo threw 10 scoreless innings for Law, Joe Bannon came on in the 11th and Connor Falaguerra’s sac fly in the 11th gave Law the 1-0 lead it would not relinquish. Second-year coach Greg Simler had this to say:
“The team has been building towards this kind of win. We knew we were playing better baseball over the last week or so and felt as though we were ready to take the next step. Our senior pitcher Matt Ferriaolo delivered a top notch pitching performance that I knew he had in him and led the way for us.”
SECOND BASE
NO-NO,NO-NO,NO-NO – Pomperaug doesn’t like giving up too many hits. Panthers’ pitcher David Cherry threw his second straight no-hitter in a SWC victory over New Fairfield 5-0. Cherry no-hit Immaculate in his last outing. The senior pitcher isn’t the only one on the team to twirl a no-no, Andrew Reel no-hit Weston last Friday in a 11-1 win. That’s three no-hitters, two in a row, in the last four games for the No. 10 team in the NHR Top-10.
THIRD BASE
3 IN A ROW – North Haven started out the season 0-3 after playing Xavier, Foran and No. 1 ND-West Haven. Since then North Haven has gone 5-1 and won three in a row. They took out Wilbur Cross 14-4 in a SCC Oronoque victory. Chris Lavorgna had a triple and scored a run. Ryan McLane got the win.
HOME
HEADED TO THE POSTSEASON – North Branford has been hot lately and it picked up win No. 8 on the season yesterday. North Branford qualifies for states and is now 8-1. Nick Perrelli got the win, he is 3-1. Perrelli pitched a complete game shutout in the 5-0 Shoreline Conference victory over East Hampton.
TODAY’S GAMES TO WATCH
Law at Foran, 3:45 p.m. : Can Law avoid the hangover?
Xavier at ND-West Haven, 3:45 p.m.: How will the Green Knights bounce back after yesterday’s marathon of a loss.
Pomperaug at Barlow, 4:15 p.m.: Anymore no-no’s left in the tank?
QUESTION OF THE DAY
With Notre Dame-West Haven falling, should the Green Knights keep the top spot? If not, who deserves to be No. 1?

Baseball at Harbor Yard moved

 Possible rain changes Saturday schedule

#ctbase -- According to St. Joseph athletic director Jim Olayos, the three games scheduled to be played at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport have been moved due to the possibility of inclement weather.

Xavier will play at Foran at 11 a.m. on Saturday and No. 6 Shelton will play at No. 10 Amity at 11 a.m. as well on Saturday. No. 6 St. Joseph will battle Seymour on May 8 at 7 p.m. at Harbor Yard. The St. Joseph game will benefit juvenile diabetes, according to Olayos.

Olayos said anyone who purchased tickets for the two Southern Connecticut Conference games, that were also going to benefit juvenile diabetes, can get a refund at their school.

The St. Joseph AD said he is disappointed that possible rain forced them to move the game. However, he said he would rather move the games and play one game instead of running the risk of having a less than stellar turnout for all three games that were all being played for a good cause.

No other teams will play on May 8 at Harbor Yard with St. Joe's and Seymour. That is the only game on the schedule in the Park City that night.

Touch 'em All: Wednesday

#ctbase – A pitcher won at the plate, Stratford’s pitching winning and Hopkins is hot. Touch ‘em all.
FIRST BASE
TEAM SHUTDOWN – Stratford’s pitching has been superb thus far in 2012. The Red Devils have shut opponents down with only one loss, 9-2 defeat to East Catholic. Stratford has gotten it done with pitching. The combo of Brian Caselli and Axel DeJesus has been dominant. DeJesus got the win yesterday to improve to 3-0 as the Red Devils defeated Bethel 6-1. Stratford improves to 6-1 and 2-0 in the SWC Colonial Division. For more info on why these two aces are so great, check out the Register next Tuesday for my feature on Caselli and DeJesus.
SECOND BASE
PITCH –HITTER – It’s nice to have a pitcher that can hit. Sheehan pitcher Kevin Duffy came through in the clutch with a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning to lead Sheehan over Cheshire 4-1 in a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivisional win. On the other side, Cheshire (2-5) pitcher Jordan Kubilus struck out four Titans (4-3).
THIRD BASE
HOTKINS – Hopkins has been getting it done thus far. They improved their record to 6-2 and 6-0 in the FAA with a 10-0 victory over Greens Farms Academy. Jack Lubin picked up the win and only allowed one hit to move to 3-0 and Jimmy Martino and Greg Volpe both had triples for Hopkins.
HOME
CLASSIC – Congrats to Westbrook sophomore centerfielder Sam Grigo, who was selected to compete in the New England Classic in June in Lowell, Mass. Grigo will take his .529 batting average, seven RBI , three triples and three stolen bases to the Lowell Spinners, the Red Sox Class A affiliate, baseball complex to showcase his skills against the bets in New England.
EXTRA BASES
Pinch-hitter Kyle Bertanza had a sac RBI to lead O’Brien Tech over Bullard-Havens 4-3 in eight innings. … Ryan Daiss struck out 14 in a 9-1 Shelton victory over East Haven. … Ansonia defeated St. Paul 6-2 to pull to 3-4 on the season. One win shy of getting to the .500 mark. … Ray Kreiger struck out nine in a 5-2 Derby triumph over Watertown.

Touch 'em All: Monday

#ctbase – We’re doing something a little different here at the Batter’s Box. Today is the first day of “Touch ‘Em All.” Here I’ll look at the four games, stories or players that stood out to me from yesterday’s action. Check it out.
FIRST BASE
COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH – A couple of teams got some timely hits on Monday. North Branford got past Coginchaug in Shoreline Conference action 3-2 in eight innings. Brandan Basil hit a double that scored Kyle Hart in the top half of the eighth. North Branford is 5-1. …Stratford is also 5-1 after Alec Ward recorded the go-ahead hit in the fifth inning as the Red Devils defeated New Milford 3-2 in SWC play yesterday.
SECOND BASE
NOT EVEN CLOSE –Despite those close results, there really weren’t too many nail-biters on Monday.  There were 16 games called into the New Haven Register newsroom yesterday and nine of them were decided by five runs or more.
THIRD BASE
JINXED? – Derby, who just got voted into the New Haven Register Top-10 poll, suffered its first defeat of the season 3-2 to St. Paul. The Red Raiders came in at the No. 9 spot after starting the season 5-0. They are now 5-1 and still a legit threat.
HOME
NO NO – Congrats to Justin Beal of Old Saybrook on his no-hitter last night. Beal led Old Saybrook past Old Lyme 3-1 in a Shoreline Conference game to pick up his second win of the season. Old Saybrook is 3-3 and Old Lyme is 4-2.
THREE UP, THREE DOWN
Three teams going up, three teams going down
THREE UP
Notre Dame-West Haven (6-0): They’ve got every No. 1 vote in the latest poll.
Shelton (5-1): With their pitching, it’s hard to see anyone taking them down.
Stratford (5-1, 1-0): Brian Caselli and Axel DeJesus are arguably the best one-two punch in the SWC.
THREE DOWN
Law (1-6): This season is starting to look eerily close to last season.
West Haven (1-4): In the SCC, it is really hard to get a break.
Sheehan (3-3): Got outscored 12-1 in back-to-back losses.

Monday's baseball notebook

Good Eye: What caught my eye from Monday's action

#ctbase – Seymour went nine, Amity only needed one and Career knocked off No. 8. It’s a numbers game, here’s what caught my eye.
WILD CATS – Career came into this season after a fairly successful 2011 campaign. The Panthers lost in the second round of the Class M tournament to the eventual champ East Hampton by just one run. If Career needed a confidence booster after a heartbreaking end to last season, it came Monday as the Panthers upset No. 8 Xavier 2-1 in an interdivisional Southern Connecticut Conference game. Jose Negron scored on a passed ball and Nick Nieves struck out three in the win. Greg Johnson hit a triple that got the rally going. He was sent home courtesy of a Negron base hit. Career improves to 3-1. Xavier is 2-1.
LET’S PLAY NINE –Seymour won its second straight game nine inning game of the season in a 5-4 victory over Woodland in a Naugatuck Valley League Brass Division game. The Wildcats defeated Ansonia 9-8 last Thursday in nine innings. Adam Merritt scored from third on an error in the bottom half of the ninth. On the mound, Merritt was stellar. He struck out 11 and only walked two. Alex Barton had two hits as Seymour moves to 2-1 and gives coach Bob Kelo career win No. 393. Bill Ross had three RBIs for Woodland as it sees its record fall to 0-3.
JUST ONE? – Yup, just one. That’s all No. 2 Amity needed with Mike Concato on the mound. The Spartans’ pitcher finished with 11 strikeouts to lead Amity over Hand 1-0 in a SCC interdivisional game. Garrison Amoroso scored the only run of the ball game. He had three hits and a double. The Spartans bounced back after losing to No. 1 Notre Dame-West Haven and are now 2-1. Hand suffers a tough loss here; the it is 2-2.
NO NO – Cody Maida of O’Brien Tech threw a no-hitter against Whitney Tech. Maida struck out 12 as O’Brien Tech won 17-0 in a Constitution State Conference game.

HOW THE TOP-10 HAS FARED

Thursday's baseball notebook

Good Eye: What caught my eye from Thursday's action

#ctbase – Shelton made a statement, Notre Dame-West Haven made some noise with the bats and Xavier punches them out. Don’t swing! Here’s what caught my eye.
SLUGFEST 2012 – Yes, it has happened before. No. 1 Notre Dame-West Haven and No. 2 Amity tangoed at John Janenda Field on Thursday and combined for 21 runs as the Green Knights improved to 2-0 with a 13-8 Southern Connecticut Conference interdivisional victory. Last season these two met and combined for, that’s right, 21 runs as Amity fell 11-10. The Spartans are now 1-1. Notre Dame-West Haven jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead only to see Amity chip away and tie it up at five. Greg Zullo put the Green Knights back on top and the top ranked team in the state kept it going to win by five. Guess those five early runs really came in handy.
UNLUCKY SEVEN – West Haven has a really talented ball club. A good mixture of young talent, good pitching and solid hitting should keep the Blue Devils in the win column this season. However, the season hasn’t started so hot. The Blue Devils are 0-2 after dropping a pair of 7-6 games to start the season. Thursday, West Haven lost 7-6 in a SCC interdivisional game to Sheehan after giving up three runs in the bottom of the seventh. For Sheehan, Kevin Duffy got the win, his first, and Brian Murphy had two doubles. Sheehan is 2-0.
400 WATCH – Seymour coach Bob Kelo is approaching 400 career wins and yesterday he got closer. The Wildcats defeated Valley rival Ansonia 9-8 in a nine inning Naugatuck Valley League win. Kelo now has 392 career wins. Alex Barton played the role of hero, driving in the winning run in the top half of the ninth. Barton drove in two runs in the victory. Adam Merritt scored three times and had two RBI. Mike Palmquist had two RBI and Alex Westine had a RBI for the Chargers who dropped to 0-2 on the season. Seymour is 1-1.
TOP 10?Shelton didn’t get into the New Haven Register top-10 poll but, yesterday the Gaels made a strong case for why they should be there. Ryan Daiss came from behind the plate to the mound and got the win in his first career start striking out nine in an 8-2 SCC interdivisional win over Fairfield Prep. The Gaels finish the week at 2-0, Prep drops to 1-1. Vinny Backert had two RBI, who Marcello Ursini scored twice for Shelton.
K’s – Xavier has had a good opening week. The Falcons picked up two wins and have been piling up the strikeouts. Xavier opened the season with a 4-0 win over North Haven in which Troy DeLeon (1-0), Mike Alanese and Chris Dibble combined for 12 punchouts and on Thursday the Falcons defeated Cheshire 9-2 and Connor Landers struck out five to start the season 1-0.
FIRST TIME – Hand not-so-new coach Travis LaPointe got his first career win at the school as it defeated East Haven 15-6. LaPointe said he coached the entire varsity squad on the Madison American Legion team. Hand is 1-1. East Haven falls to 0-2 after dropping a SCC interdivisional game.
GROUNDBALLS – Hamden Hall improved to 3-1 after defeating Rye (N.Y.) 8-1. Justin Santiago hit home run. … Darrian Davis drove in the winning run as Lyman Hall defeated Hamden 5-4 in a SCC interdivisional game. … Axel DeJesus struck out seven as Stratford knocked off Trinity Catholic in a non league game.

Wednesday's baseball notebook

Good eye: what caught my eye from Wednesday's action

#ctbase – Spring has sprung and Flowers are already out, two teams did something for the first time, a few teams were so glad to get out and start the season that they stayed out a little longer and Foran walked to a win. Grab the allergy medicine, here’s what caught my eye.

OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT – The Hyde/Hillhouse co-op put together two teams that have had their struggles as of late. The Academics had gone 0-24 in the Southern Connecticut Conference Hammonasset Division in the past three seasons and Hyde was 0-19 in 2011. The two teams came together in the Shoreline Conference and picked up a non conference victory in a 22-8 season-opening rout of Prince Tech on Wednesday. Chris Ruggiero had a two-run homer and four RBI en route to three hits. Jeremy Brown added three RBI and Kahlil Morant went deep for a three-run homer. This is the first win for either team since 2010. Hyde/Hillhouse is 1-0… Hamden first-year coach Chris Borelli picked up his first win at the program. The former Hand coach led the Green Dragons to a 12-1 SCC interdivisional victory over Wilbur Cross. Erin Moskal went all seven innings and picked up the win. Joe Tommaselli flirted with a cycle hitting a double, triple and going long en route to five RBI.
THE MAGIC NUMBER – Down by a couple runs in the bottom of the seventh at home, Career needed a big inning or it would start 2012 0-1. Coach Brad Chernovetz's boys got the job done coming up big with three runs to steal a season-opening SCC interdivisional victory 7-6 over West Haven. Greg Johnson, who led the Panthers’ basketball team to their first state title in school history, had the go-ahead RBI on a groundout. Will Jackson drove in a run and had two base hits. Matt Gagne paced coach Mike Anquillare’s ball club with three hits. Career is 1-0 and West Haven falls to 0-1. Melvin Santiago got the win for Career.
KEEP WALKING – Foran’s James Richetelli had a good eye yesterday and walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to lift the No. 3 Lions over Cheshire 4-3 in a SCC interdivisional contest. Ryan Manning hit a three-run triple for the Lions as they start the season 1-0. Casey McCone came on in the ninth and got the win. For Cheshire Vincent Sansone had an RBI.
EXTRA, EXTRA – Foran wasn’t the only team that needed a few extra frames to come away with a win. Morgan picked up a 6-5 nine inning Shoreline Conference win over Valley Regional. Stefan DiCrosta drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Tim Neri got the win for Morgan.
GREAT GRAB! – Paul Tupper kept Hopkins perfect at 3-0 by making a great catch in stride in the outfield to stop a Rye rally as Hopkins topped Rye (N.Y.) 7-5. Josh Knopf got the win on the hill, Jack Lubin and Tupper both had doubles and Stephen Falcigno had a triple.
CLUTCH – No. 10 Sheehan came dangerously close to dropping its first game of the season. Tied at 2-all heading to the seventh the Indians got a game-winning RBI from Brian Murphy to take the season-opening SCC interdivisional win 3-2. James Davvit picked up the win for Sheehan. Ben Monte had two hits and a RBI for Guilford.
FULL BLOOM – The top ranked Notre Dame-West Haven Green Knights started the season off right thanks to Gary Flowers. The senior hurler pitched a complete game shutout, striking out six to lead ND-West Haven over Branford 5-0 in a SCC interdivisional game. Flowers only gave up three hits in the ballgame. Kyle Lockery helped out his pitcher with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
