Game of the Day: Greenwich at New Canaan (Greenwich Time)
NEW CANAAN -- The New Canaan and Greenwich baseball teams had both secured spots in next week's FCIAC tournament, meaning neither team needed a win Wednesday at Mead Park but that did little to diminish the playoff like atmosphere present from the opening pitch.After grabbing an early lead, Greenwich came from behind to beat the Rams 7-5, with the final two outs coming on strikeouts with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Derby 6, Ansonia 4: Dillon McMahon had two hits and two runs and winning pitcher Sal Frosceno had a double and scored twice for the host Red Raiders in this Naugatuck Valley League win.Michael Kreiger had a single and two RBIs and Victor Soto hit a two-run home run for Derby (10-9). Ryan O’Connor had a double, triple, two runs and two RBIs for the Chargers (11-8).
Guilford 7, Cheshire 3: J.P. Peters hit a three-run home run and Ben Monte was two-for-four with and RBI as the Indians (9-8) topped the Rams (8-10) in Cheshire.
North Haven 4, Fairfield Prep 3: Chris Brockett walked with the bases loaded to score John DeCusati with the walk-off run in the Indians’ (12-7) victory over the Jesuits (13-6) in North Haven.
Shelton 3, Foran 0: Justin Lynch had a two-run single and Vin Backert struck out five in the Gaels’ (13-6) victory over the Lions (8-9) in Shelton.
Stratford 2, New Milford 0: Josten Beato allowed four hits and struck out five in the complete game for the visiting Red Devils in this South-West Conference win.
Beato drove in the eventual winning run for Stratford (8-10), which qualified for the state tournament.
West Haven 7, East Haven 5: Michael Brand and Tom Wilkerson doubled and the Blue Devils (11-7) topped the Yellow Jackets (9-11) in East Haven.
No. 2 Xavier 9, Branford 1: Ben Criscuolo pitched a complete game five-hitter and helped his cause with two hits for the visiting Falcons in this SCC interdivision win. Xavier is 19-1.
