Law beats ND-West Haven again, advances

WEST HAVEN — Matt Ferraiolo pitched a complete game shutout and Jake Rouse had the only RBI of the game in the first inning as No. 27 Law upset No. 6 Notre Dame-West Haven 1-0 in the first round of the Class L baseball tournament.
This was the third time Law (11-10) defeated the Green Knights (16-6) this season.
“I know the tougher the game the more these guys get up for it,” Law coach Greg Simler said. “I’m not surprised.”
The loss ends the Green Knights’ hopes of repeating as Class L champs.
“I think if we got by this one we might have a shot ,” Notre Dame-West Haven coach Lou Kessler said, “but in the last eight games we haven’t hit the ball. It happens, its baseball.”
Notre Dame-West Haven pitcher Gary Flowers settled down after giving up the first-inning run and only surrendered four hits overall.
Ferraiolo matched Flowers inning for inning, only allowing two hits in the game and striking out four.
“I was nervous,” Ferraiolo said, “but I like being nervous. It makes me better. My pitches have more velocity, I feel a lot better when I’m nervous.”
Law defeated Notre Dame-West Haven 1-0 in extra innings on April 24 and then 6-3 on May 12 in the regular-season.
With No. 11 Wilton up next in the second round Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Wilton, Simler wants his guys to stay focused.
“I told them not to get too up,” Simler said. “In tournament play, you have to come back 24 hours later.”

Daiss, Shelton head to SCC title

Touch 'em All update (More to come)

#ctbase --Shelton’s Ryan Daiss was not healthy. The senior catcher-turned-pitcher rolled his ankle rounding first base in the Gaels’ quarterfinal win over Guilford on Wednesday. Daiss limped off the mound occasionally in his outing in the Southern Connecticut Conference semifinals against No. 4 Xavier on Thursday.
“I was at least going to go one inning to see how it would go,” Daiss said. “It went well and it turned into seven.”
Well might be an understatement as Daiss got out of almost every jam and helped lead the top-seeded Gaels to the SCC championship game on Saturday at noon after a 7-2 victory over No. 4 Xavier at Yale Field. Shelton coach Scott Gura was impressed.
“These kids are too young to remember Curt Schilling,” the coach said,” that was the kind of effort he gave.”
As good as Daiss was, Xavier coach Rich Magner knew his team was just one hit away.
“I tell them all the time,” Magner said, “‘you’ve got a chance to win a game, step up and get a hit.’“
The Gaels will have a chance to win their second SCC crown in the last three seasons. Shelton last won it in 2010 and Daiss was a member of that team.
“It was a great feeling,” Daiss said. “I hope we get that feeling again on Saturday.”

Hand shocks Notre Dame-West Haven

Touch 'em All Playoff update

#ctbase -- When the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament pairings came out and No. 7 Hand drew No.2 Notre Dame-West Haven, Hand coach Travis LaPointe knew his team would get some valuable experience.

"We said, 'At the worst we would see Notre Dame in the Class L tournament,' " the first-year coach said.  "If we want to win Class L, we have to go through Notre Dame."

The Tigers got through the Green Knights and will now move on to the SCC semifinals after a 3-1 win on Wednesday. This was the first ever win in SCC tournament play for Hand, according to LaPointe. Hand has won six games in a row and will face No. 3 Amity at Yale Field at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

"I'm just amazed by the way these guys are playing baseball," LaPointe said.

The Tigers handed Gary Flowers (6-1) his first loss of the season. Mike Iannuzzi and Dylan Buller both had two hits.

"We were ready for this game," LaPointe said. "We expect to win when we play. This was a really special win for the program."

Ryan Daiss is scheduled to start the semifinal against either Branford or Xavier, according to Shelton coach Scott Gura. Gura said Daiss twisted his ankle today but, he did finish the game and should be on the mound Thursday.

Seymour/Ansonia suspended

NVL tournament washout

#ctbase -- All Seymour needs is six outs to move on to the semifinals of the Nuagatuck Valley League tournament. And the No. 7 Wildcats will have to wait another day to get those outs after their quarterfinal game with No. 2 Ansonia was suspended due to rain on Monday.

"I was actually surprised we even got started," said Seymour coach Bob Kelo. "If we started at 3:30 I think we might've got (the game) in."

The NVL quarters turned out to be a washout with No. 8 Torrington vs. No. 1 Derby and No. 6 Holy Cross vs. No. 3 Wolcott getting postponed. They will be played tomorrow weather pending. Ansonia and Seymour will resume from the bottom of the sixth inning at 3:30 tomorrow.

BREAKING: ND-WH coach Lou Kessler wins 300th at school

Touch 'em All update

#ctbase -- It is not like Notre Dame-West Haven coach Lou Kessler to make a big deal out of an individual accomplishment.

So after capturing career win No. 300 at Notre Dame-West Haven, he didn't.

"I'm home right now getting ready for practice tomorrow at eight in the morning," Kessler said.

The Green Knights defeated Foran 7-1 in a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision game to close out the season and give Kessler his 300th career win at the school.

"It's a good feeling for the players and the assistant coaches that I've had," Kessler said.

Kessler, who also played baseball at Notre Dame-West Haven, had previously won 31 games at Platt Tech. He now has 331 career wins. As far as the 300 at ND-WH, Kessler said he didn't even tell his players about it.

"I never mentioned it," Kessler said.

Shelton can clinch top spot

#ctbase -- With No. 8 Shelton's 7-3 SCC interdivision win over No. 6 Notre Dame-West Haven on Wednesday, the Gaels put themselves in position to clinch the top seed in the conference tournament.

The Gaels are 14-3 and the Green Knights are 15-4. Shelton has won six straight and has to defeat Sheehan and Wilbur Cross  to close out the week in order to claim the top spot, accordng to Shelton coach Scott Gura.

"We'll avoid Notre Dame and Amity until the finals which is huge," Gura said.

Ryan Testani had a three-run double and Ryan Daiss got the win on the mound. For Daiss, this was his biggest win of the season.

"People were questioning the fact that he pitched against some sub par teams," Gura said. "He went out there and pitched extremely well today."

BREAKING: Law bests No. 2 ND-West Haven again

Touch em All update

#ctbase -- Just hours after clinching the SCC Quinnipiac division, No. 2 Notre Dame-West Haven lost to Law 6-3 this afternoon.

"We woke up our bats today and took advantage of some opportunities," said Law coach Greg Simler.

Law handed the Green Knights' their first loss in a 1-0 extra inning victory earlier this season.

"ND is a real tough team to beat once, let alone twice," Simler said.

Sean Cameron and Jake Saley had two RBIs for Law. Joe Bannon got the win for Law (7-9).

"Our pitcher made some great pitches and the defense came up big a few times," Simler said.

Mike Panza and Jake DeRosa had two hits for Notre Dame-West Haven (14-3).

Law needs one more win to qualify for a state playoff spot. Law ends the season with Cheshire on Monday, Foran on Tuesday, East Haven on Wednesday and Xavier on Friday. All four teams have defeated Law this season.

"This win was extremely important for us to get to No. 8," Simler said.

Fairfield Prep knocks off No. 2 Notre Dame-WH

Touch 'em All update

#ctbase -- Losers of three straight coming into Monday, sitting on seven wins and staring down No. 2 Notre Dame-West Haven, one would think Fairfield Prep would have to wait another day to get that elusive state playoff spot.

Fairfield Prep was tired of waiting.

The Jesuits jumped out to an early lead and held off a late Green Knights' rally to upset second ranked Notre Dame-WH 5-3.

"We've been sitting on seven wins for a week," Prep coach Rudy Mauritz said. "We got tired of sitting on seven wins and a team like Notre Dame brings out the best in us."

With the win, the Jesuits (8-7) clinch a state playoff spot. The Green Knights are 13-2, with losses to Law and now Prep.

"Brett Young did a good job for us today," Mauritz said. "He pitched five really good innings. Got an out in the sixth, a couple guys got on and we started losing some steam."

The Jesuits led 5-0 before ND-WH rallied for three runs in the sixth. However, Prep got out of the sixth and closed out the upset victory.

"It's not going to be easy," Mauritz said. "They're too good to keep down. I didn't expect them to be silent. It was about seeing how much we've grown up and matured as a group of guys. We didn't back down and we did a great job of finishing the game."

Shelton knocks off No. 5 Amity

Touch 'em All update

#ctbase --The last time Shelton played Amity it didn't end so well for the Gaels. Shelton lost on a walk-off single from Amity's Paul Gusmano. This time around for Shelton, things went according to plan as the Gaels upset No. 5 Amity 4-1.

"We lost to them the first time," Gura said. "It was a walkoff loss, so we knew what it was going to take to beat them."

The Gaels had Ryan Testani go up against Mike Concato. Concato threw a no-hitter last week.

"It was ace vs. ace," Gura said.

The Gaels got strong contributions from Bryan Kondor, whose base hit tied the game, and Ryan Zahornasky, who had a two-run double with the bases loaded to give Shelton the lead. Ryan Daiss also added a RBI

"We had some big hits," Gura said.

Shelton (11-3, unranked) faces Sheehan, Lyman Hall and Hand to close out the week. Are they a Top-10 team?

"I think we have the capability to be a Top-10 team," Gura said. "I think we just have to be more consistent."

However, he went on to say: "I'd rather end the season in the Top-10 then worry about what's going on during the season."

Should Derby crack the poll?

#ctbase -- Sal Frosceno struck out seven and pitched a complete game shutout to lead Derby over Seymour 2-0 on Friday. Frosceno only allowed four hits, all singles. Ray Kreiger and Colin Haydu had one RBI each for the Red Raiders who improved to 13-1.

The Red Raiders lost 3-2 to St. Paul Catholic back on April 16. Since then, Derby has won eight in a row. North Branford should get some love in this week's poll. NB has won eight of its last nine games, not including Friday's (May 4) game. So my question to you is: Who should get in the poll next week?

POLL: Should home teams be the official scorer?

#ctbase –Amity junior pitcher Mike Concato threw his first career no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Sheehan in a Southern Connecticut Conference Housatonic Division game at Woodbridge.

Concato struck out nine and did not walk anyone. It would have been a perfect game had there not been two errors committed by the Spartans.

However, after the game Sheehan coach Matt Altieri tweeted:

“Real tough only got one hit but pitched and played D well.”
He also tweeted:

“Infield single in 7th but exciting game till the very end.”

According to Amity coach Sal Coppola, the play in question happened in the seventh inning when Mike Kakalow led off with a ground ball that was fielded by Spartans’ third baseman Keith Klebart.

According to Coppola, Klebart’s throw was in the dirt, allowing Kakalow to reach first. Coppola said he thought it was a tough play, but it was makeable.

Altieri said he didn’t know originally Amity had it scored as an error. The home team is designated as the official book and Amity was the home team.

Both coaches didn’t want Concato’s strong effort on the mound to be tainted by any controversy.
“(Concato) pitched such an incredible game,” Coppola said

Seymour coach Bob Kelo wins 400th career game

Touch 'em all update

#ctbase -- Seymour coach Bob Kelo won his 400th career game Wednesday afternoon against Crosby in Waterbury. The Wildcats won 6-0 to improve Kelo's career record to 400-202 in his 27th season at Seymour. For Kelo, this milestone means he is not a young man anymore.

"It means I've been doing this a long time," Kelo said with a laugh. "I've had great assistant coaches over the years. I have guys that have played for me that have been sending me messages to congratulate me when the game ended, so yeah. It means alot, the relationships you make from coaching over the years."

The Wildcats have won three in a row and Kelo is glad to get this over with.

"I was relieved," Kelo said. "I was hoping this thing didn't carry on for us. I could tell the kids were pressing a little bit."

In his time at Seymour, Kelo has won one state championship in 2007 and guided the Wildcats to the title game six times. The most recent appearance was last season.

"The state title was good," Kelo said, "the times we made it to the finals. The 10 or 11 times we made it to final fours, I mean, those are always good."

And the Wildcats' skipper is hoping to get back to the championship game again this season.

"We're looking forward to that," Kelo said.
